Many films and discussions these days are about the planet becoming too crowded and how we need to do something about it. According to Elon Musk (Tesla & Space X) and many tech experts, the most logical solution is simply to go and develop a next planet. And what comes to mind here is Mars.
If, like me, you have a bit of a soft spot for science fiction, you are probably thinking: “Yes, awesome! Let’s do it. How can I help?” Well, we have an idea.
Potatoes and evolution
Naturally, plants will come to Mars too. Because they are of great use to us! The role of the first plants on Mars is reserved for the potato. It can hardly get more boring, but we can eat them and grow them in a small space. But… Who would want that, that way? Camping a little for the rest of your life and eating only potatoes?
Let’s think a bit bigger, because there is of course a better way. We have to make sure we replicate the evolution that also worked on Earth, but then of course at a faster pace.
For the non-evolution experts among us… First you have a primordial soup with lots of algae, then you let a few ferns and other multicellular organisms emerge in it, and pretty soon the entire planet is full of tropical green plants. And as it happens, we do know a thing or two about that!
Forever Plants goes to Mars
We have the knowledge and the talent in house to make tropical green plants grow and flourish rather nicely even in an environment as unfriendly as the Dutch business climate. In fact, we are pretty good at it. So a place where no rules and environmental problems exist yet, where there are only opportunities and where there is plenty of space, that is a piece of cake, right?!
We will add a few robots to do the work, grow remotely via the climate computer… Easy peasy, right? So… When Elon Musk calls soon (and he will, because he is a smart guy who knows exactly who to turn to), we will have the conversation. And we will use our knowledge and yours for the next big step of Forever Plants: Mission to Mars.
